Literature Review of Bank Efficiency Essay
Measuring the efficiency and productivity of banking firms has been playing a predominant role in helping managers or regulators to achieve a better understanding of the success or failure of policy strategies and make better decisions. Furthermore, the evaluation results of efficiency are also of major importance to stock owners, depositors and investors. The influence of ownership on cost and profit efficiencies The situation is similar in transition countries. Bonin et al. 2005) investigated 11 transition countries and claimed that private ownership was not sufficient to increase bank efficiency as they did not find enough evidence to prove that private owned banks are more efficient than government owned banks, which is consistent with Altunbasââ¬â¢s conclusions. Additionally, Bonin et al. (2005) also found evidence that foreign owned banks, especially those with strategic owners, were associated with greater cost efficiency and better services. In contrast with the Boninââ¬â¢s viewpoints, Lensink et al. (2008) suggested that normally the foreign owned banks tended to show disadvantages in bank efficiency. However, to what extend the statement is true is associated with the host and home country conditions. The first factor to be mentioned is the quality of the home country governance: the foreign owned banks turn out to operate more efficiently if the institutions in the home county are with higher quality. Another significant element to be illustrated is the influence of distance: the smaller institution distances between the host and home counties, the greater the efficiency of the foreign owned banks. The conclusion that high similarities between the host and home country institutions would reduce foreign bank inefficiency is the third element to be noted.

Sex in Indian Society
Hindu views of homosexuality and, in general, LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender) issues, are diverse. Same-sex relations and gender variance have been represented within Hinduism from Vedic times through to the present day, in rituals, law books, religious or so-called mythical narratives, commentaries, paintings, and sculpture. The extent to which these representations embrace or reject homosexuality has been disputed within the religion as well as outside of it. In 2009, The United Kingdom Hindu Council issued a statement that ââ¬ËHinduism does not condemn homosexuality', subsequent to the decision of the Delhi High Court to legalise homosexuality in India Unlike the West, the Hindu society does not have the concept of ââ¬Ësexual orientation' that classifies males on the basis of who they desire. However, there is a strong, ancient concept of third gender, which is for individuals who have strong elements of both male and female in them. Third genders include males with a predominant feminine soul or gender orientation. These males are not classified as men. Only non-feminine gendered males are classified as ââ¬Ëmen. ââ¬Ë The Hindu society, since the ancient times, does not consider the men's desire or sexual activity with men, the same as that of a third gender's desire or sexual activity with men. Although, the society, formally does not acknowledge sexuality between men, it formally acknowledges and gives space to sexuality between men and third genders as a variation of male-female sex (i. e. , a part of heterosexuality, rather than homosexuality, if analysed in western terms). In fact, Hijras, Alis, Kotis, etc. ââ¬â the various forms of third gender that exist in India today, all are characterized by the gender role of having receptive anal and oral sex with men. Sexuality between men (as distinct from third genders) have nevertheless thrived, mostly unspoken, informally, within men's spaces, without being seen as ââ¬Ëdifferent' in the way its seen in the West. Like in other non-western cultures, it is considered more or less, a universal aspect of manhood, even if not socially desirable. Its the effeminate male sexuality for men (or for women) which is seen as ââ¬Ëdifferent,' and differently categorised. Men often refer to their sexual play with each other as ââ¬ËMasti. Western concept of Homosexuality seeks to break this distinction between third gender and men, and to isolate sexuality between men along with the third genders, with all its negative consequences. As such, men in India have long resisted the concept of ââ¬Ëgay,' and have sex with men without identifying as a ââ¬Ëhomosexual. Gay activists, have sought to introduce a locally acceptable term for ââ¬Ëhomosexual' for two decades, without success. Finally, the term MSM was taken, because it was technically difficult for men to avoid, if they had sex with men. However, it too was rejected by Indian men, as if was seen as just another term for ââ¬Ëgay. ââ¬Ë In the past few years, however, the concept of ââ¬Ëhomosexuality' has finally taken root, as men's spaces have weakened because o f Westernization and gay groups becoming strong with years of gay and AIDS activism. A significant fallout of this has been that sexual desire between men, which was near universal earlier, is now become more and more isolated from the mainstream, as men are distancing themselves from it because of the stigma of effeminacy or third gender attached to the notion of ââ¬Ëgay. ââ¬Ë Things have become so bad in some westernized urban spaces, that two men can no longer hold hands ââ¬â something which was a common sight in India, not too far back. Contemporary Hindu society Sexuality is rarely discussed openly in contemporary Hindu society, especially in modern India where homosexuality was illegal until 2009, due to colonial British laws. On July 2, 2009 The Delhi High Court in a historic judgement decriminalised homosexuality in India; where the court noted that the existing laws violated fundamental rights to personal liberty (Article 21 of the Indian Constitution) and equality (Article 14) and prohibition of discrimination (Article 15). Even before this judgement, in India homosexuals were very rarely prosecuted despite the existence of such laws in the penal code. Even though Hinduism is never known to exclusively ban homosexuality, certain Hindu nationalist factions are opposed to legalizing homosexuality while certain others choose to remain silent. However, in the last twenty years homosexuality has become increasingly visible in the print and audio-visual media, with many out LGBT people, an active LGBT movement, and a large Indian LGBT presence on the Internet. From the 1990s onward, modern gay and lesbian Hindu organizations have surfaced in India's major cities and in 2004, plausible calls were made for the first time to repeal India's outdated and nontraditional laws against homosexuality Deepa Mehta's 1996 film Fire, which depicts a romantic relationship between two Hindu women, was informally banned for ââ¬Å"religious insensitivityâ⬠after Hindu Nationalists attacked cinemas where it was being screened on the grounds that it denigrated Indian culture, not on the grounds of homophobia per se,a position shared and confirmed by feminist Madhu Kishwar. In addition, The Bharatiya Janata Party (Hindu Nationalist Party) who were in power in India at the time, refused to ban it Similar protests occurred in 2004 against the lesbian-themed film Girlfriend ââ¬â even though the portrayal of lesbianism was this time distinctly unsympathetic Several human-rights groups such as the People's Union for Civil Liberties have asserted that sexual minorities in India face severe discrimination and violence, especially those from rural and lower caste backgrounds. Hijras and other third-gender groups are similarly oppressed in modern-day India, forced to live on the margins of society In her book, Love's Rite, Ruth Vanita examines the phenomena of same-sex weddings, many by Hindu rites, which have been reported by the Indian press over the last thirty years and with increasing frequency. In the same period, same-sex joint suicides have also been reported. Most of these marriages and suicides are by lower middle-class female couples from small towns and rural areas across the country; these women have no contact with any LGBT movements. Both cross-sex and same-sex couples, when faced with family opposition, tend to resort to either elopement and marriage or to joint suicide in the hope of reunion in the next life. Vanita examines how Hindu doctrines such as rebirth and the genderlessness of the soul are often interpreted to legitimize socially disapproved relationships, including same-sex ones. In a 2004 survey, most ââ¬â though not all ââ¬â swamis said they opposed the concept of a Hindu-sanctified gay marriage. But several Hindu riests have performed same-sex marriages, arguing that love is the result of attachments from previous births and that marriage, as a union of spirit, is transcendental to gender. Many Indian and Hindu intellectuals now publicly support LGBT civil rights. Some liberal Hindu reform movements, especially those in the West, also support social acceptance of gays, lesbians and other gender minorities. Psychoanalyst Sudhir Kakar writes that Hindus are more accepting of ââ¬Å"deviance or eccentricityâ⬠than are adherents of Western religions, who typically treat sexual variance as ââ¬Å"anti-social or psychopathological, requiring ââ¬Ëcorrection' or ââ¬Ëcure'â⬠. Hindus, he argues, believe instead that each individual must fulfill their personal destiny (svadharma) as they travel the path towards moksha (transcendence). Commenting on the legalization of homosexuality in India; Anil Bhanot, general secretary of The United Kingdom Hindu Council said: The point here is that the homosexual nature is part of the natural law of God; it should be accepted for what it is, no more and no less. Hindus are generally conservative but it seems to me that in ancient India, they even celebrated sex as an enjoyable part of procreation, where priests were invited for ceremonies in their home to mark the beginning of the process[ The third gender Hindu philosophy has the concept of a third sex or third gender (tritiya-prakriti ââ¬â literally, ââ¬Å"third natureâ⬠). This category includes a wide range of people with mixed male and female natures such as transgenders, homosexuals, transsexuals, bisexuals, the intersexed, and so on. Such persons are not considered fully male or female in traditional Hinduism, being a combination of both. They are mentioned as third sex by nature (birth and are not expected to behave like ordinary men and women. They often keep their own societies or town quarters, perform specific occupations (such as masseurs, hairdressers, flower-sellers, domestic servants, etc. ) and are generally attributed a semi-divine status. ââ¬ËTheir participation in religious ceremonies, especially as crossdressing dancers nd devotees of certain temple gods/goddesses, is considered auspicious in traditional Hinduism. Some Hindus believe that third-sex people have special powers allowing them to bless or curse others. In Hinduism, the universal creation is honored as unlimitedly diverse and the recognition of a third sex is simply one more aspect of this understanding. In 2008, the state of Tamil Nadu recognised the ââ¬Å"Third Genderâ⬠; with its civil supplies department giving in the ration card a provision for a new sex column as ââ¬ËT', distinct from the usual ââ¬ËM' and ââ¬ËF' for males and females respectively. This was the first time that authorities anywhere in India have officially recognised the third gender. Hindu religious narratives The Hindu god Shiva is often represented as Ardhanarisvara, with a dual male and female nature. This sculpture is from the Elephanta Caves near Mumbai. In the Hindu narrative tradition, stories of gods and mortals changing gender occur. Sometimes they also engage in sexual activities as different reeincarnated genders. Homosexual and transgender Hindus commonly identify with and worship the various Hindu deities connected with gender diversity such as Ardhanarisvara (the hermaphrodite form of Shiva); Aravan (a hero whom Krishna married after becoming a woman); Ayyappa (a god born from the union of Shiva and Mohini, a female incarnation of Vishnu); Bahuchara-devi (a goddess connected with trans-sexuality and eunuchism); Bhagavati-devi (a Hindu goddess associated with crossdressing); Bhagiratha Maharaja (an Indian king born of two female parents); Caitanya Mahaprabhu (an incarnation of Radha and Krishna combined); Chandi-Chamunda (twin warrior goddesses); Gadadhara (an incarnation of Radha in male form); Gangamma-devi (a goddess connected with crossdressing and disguises); Harihara (Shiva and Vishnu combined); Kartikeya; Vallabhavardhana, Yellamma-devi and countless others There are also specific festivals connected to the worship of such gender-variant deities, some of which are famous in India for their crossdressing devotees and homosexual undertones. These festivals include the Aravan Festival of Tamil Nadu, the Ayyappa and Chamaya-Villaku Festivals of Kerala, the Bahucara-mata Festivals of Gujarat and the Yellamma-devi Festivals of Karnataka, among others Mahabharata In the Mahabharata, as the result of a curse he was compelled to honor, the hero Arjuna takes a ââ¬Å"vow of eunuchism,â⬠that is, to live as the third sex for a year: ââ¬Å"O lord of the Earth, I will declare myself as one of the ââ¬Å"neuterâ⬠sex. O monarch, it is, indeed difficult to hide the marks of the bowstring on my arms. I will, however, cover both my cicatrized arms with bangles. Wearing brilliant rings on my ears and conch-bangles on my wrists and causing a braid to hang down from my head, I shall, O king, appear as one of the third sex, Vrihannala by name Another important character, Shikhandi, is born female, but raised as a boy. Sihkandi's father, King Drupada, had begged the god Mahadeva to give him a son, to which Mahadeva replied: ââ¬Å"Thou shalt have a child who will be a female and male. Desist, O king, it will not be otherwise. â⬠When Sikhandi comes of age and marries, Sikhandi's wife ââ¬Å"soon came to know that Sikhandiwas a woman like herself, refusing him. â⬠Fleeing from the unnamed wife's enraged father, Sikhandi encounters a male Yaksha (nature spirit) in the forest, and they agree to swap sexes. Now in a male body, Sikhandi proves to his father-in-law that he is truly male, after the latter sends ââ¬Å"a number of young ladies of great beautyâ⬠to Sikhandi to test him. They report back that he is ââ¬Å"a powerful person of the masculine sex,â⬠and Sikhandi becomes a skilled and famous warrior, playing a pivotal role in the war. Ramayana In some versions of the Krittivasa Ramayana, the most popular Bengali text on the pastimes of Lord Ramachandra (an incarnation of Vishnu), there is an interesting narrative of two queens that conceived a child together. When the famous king of the Sun Dynasty, Maharaja Dilipa, died, the demigods become concerned that he did not have a son to continue his line. Lord Shiva therefore appeared before the king's two widowed queens and commanded them, ââ¬Å"You two make love together and by my blessings you will bear a beautiful son. The two wives, with great affection for each other, executed Shiva's order until one of them conceived a child. Unfortunately, however, the child was born boneless, but by the blessings of a sage, Astavakra, the child was restored to full health and continued the dynasty. Astavakra accordingly named the child ââ¬Å"Bhagirathaâ⬠ââ¬â he who was born from two vulvas . Bhagiratha later became one of the most famous kings of India and is credited with bringing the Ganges River down to earth through his austerities. Hindu texts Hindus have many sacred texts and different communities give special importance to different texts. Even more so than in other religions, Hindus also foster disparate interpretations of the meaning of various texts. The Vedas, which form the foundation of Hinduism for many, do not refer explicitly to homosexuality, but Rigveda says Vikruti Evam Prakriti (perversity/diversity is what nature is all about, or, what seems un-natural is also natural), which some scholars believe recognizes the cyclical constancy of homosexual/transsexual dimensions of human life, like all forms of universal diversities. People of a third gender (tritiya-prakriti), not fully men nor women, are mentioned here and there throughout Hindu texts such as the Puranas but are not specifically defined. In general they are portrayed as effeminate men, often cowardly, and with no desire for women. Modern readers often draw parallels between these and modern stereotypes of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender sexual identities. Historians Ruth Vanita and Saleem Kidwai, in their pioneering book, Same-Sex Love in India: Readings from Literature and History, for the first time compiled extracts from Indian texts, from ancient to modern times, including many Hindu texts, translated from 15 Indian languages. In their accompanying analytical essays, they also demonstrated that Hindu texts have discussed and debated same-sex desire from the earliest times, in tones ranging from critical to non-judgmental to playful and celebratory. Historian Devdutt Pattanaik summarizes the place of homosexuality in Hindu literature as follows: ââ¬Å"though not part of the mainstream, its existence was acknowledged but not approved. â⬠Other Indologists assert that homosexuality was not approved for brahmanas or the twice-born but accepted among the lower classes. In his book, Tritiya-Prakriti: People of the Third Sex, Vaishnava monk Amara Das Wilhelm demonstrates how ancient expressions of Hinduism accommodated homosexual and transgender persons much more positively than we see in India today: ââ¬Å"Early Vedic teachings stressed responsible family life and asceticism but also tolerated different types of sexualities within general society Manu Smriti The Manuscript, which lists the oldest codes of conduct that were proposed to be followed by a Hindu, does include mention of homosexual practices, but only as something to be regulated. Though homosexuality was considered a part of sexual practices, it was not always well accepted. There were punishments prescribed for homosexual behaviour. For instance, the verse referring to sexual relations between an older woman and a virgin (woman) readsâ⬠â⬠¦ woman who pollutes a damsel (virgin) shall instantly have (her head) shaved or two fingers cut off, and be made to ride (through the town) on a donkeyâ⬠, suggesting a severe punishment. However, the verse referring to sexual relations between two virgins suggests a relatively milder punishment ââ¬â ââ¬Å"â⬠¦ a damsel who pollutes (another) damsel must be fined two hundred (panas), pay the double of her (nuptial) fee, and receive ten (lashes with a) rodâ⬠. These provisions, quoted out of context, seem homophobic, but in fact they are concerned not with the gender of the partners but with the loss of virginity that rendered a young woman unworthy of marriage. For instance, the punishment for a forced sex act between a man and a woman states ââ¬Å"â⬠¦ if any man through insolence forcibly contaminates a maiden, two of his fingers shall be instantly cut off, and he shall pay a fine of six hundred (panas)â⬠, which seems more severe in comparison to the punishment prescribed for the same act between two virgins. Sex between non-virgin women incurred a very small fine, while homosexual intercourse between men was sought to be censured by a prescription of a bath with one's clothes on, and a penance of ââ¬Å"eating the five products of the cow and keeping a one-night fastâ⬠- the penance being a replacement of the traditional concept of homosexual intercourse resulting in a loss of caste. The discrepancy in treatment may have been due to the text's non-equal views on males and females, considering that the Manusmriti is the same scripture that has stated that the status of woman in the society is the same (or even lower than) that of a manââ¬â¢s land, his cattle and other possessions. For Brahmanas and twice-born men, ââ¬Å"causing an injury to a priest, smelling wine or things that are not to be smelled, crookedness, and sexual union with a man are traditionally said to cause loss of caste In the same chapter, the atonement for twice-born men is a ritual bath: ââ¬Å"A twice-born man who has intercourse with a male, or with a female in a cart drawn by oxen, in water, or in the day-time, shall bathe, dressed in his clothes. Here again, it can be noticed that the proscriptions are specifically for brahmana and twice-born males; there is no mention in the Manu Smriti of punishment for homosexual behavior between males of the other classes. The majority of sexual matters dealt with by the law books are heterosexual in nature, and the punishments prescribed for heterosexual transgressions are often more severe. For example, ââ¬Å"A man who is not a Brahmana ought to suffer death for adultery (samgrahana)â⬠(2. 8. 359). The Manu Smriti also notes the biological origins of a third gender: ââ¬Å"A male child is produced by a greater quantity of male seed, a female child by the prevalence of the female; if both are equal, a third-sex child [napumsaka] or boy and girl twins are produced; if either are weak or deficient in quantity, a failure of conception results. â⬠(MS 3. 49) Narada Smriti The Narada Smriti, written around 400 CE, forbids the marriage of homosexual men (mukhebhaga ââ¬â men who perform oral sex on other men) to women: ââ¬Å"These four irsyaka, sevyaka, vataretas, and mukhebhaga] are to be completely rejected as unqualified for marriage, even for a woman who has been raped. â⬠(NS 1. 12. 15) The Narada Smriti also lists fourteen different types of panda or men who are impotent with women. Kama Sutra The Kama Sutra is an ancient text dealing with kama or desire (of all kinds), which in Hindu thought is one of the four normative and spiritual goals of life. The Kama Sutra is the earliest extant and most important work in the Kama Shastra tradition of Sanskrit literature. It was compiled by the hilosopher Vatsyayana around the 4th century, from earlier texts, and describes homosexual practices in several places, as well as a range of sex/gender ââ¬Ëtypes'. The author describes techniques by which masculine and feminine types of the third sex (tritiya-prakriti), as well as women, perform fellatio. The Second Part, Ninth Chapter of Kama Sutra specifically describes two kinds of men that we would recognize today as masculine- and feminine-type homosexuals but which are mentioned in older, Victorian British translations as simply ââ¬Å"eunuchs. â⬠The chapter describes their appearances ââ¬â feminine types dressed up as women whereas masculine types maintained muscular physiques and grew small beards, moustaches, etc. ââ¬â and their various professions as masseurs, barbers and prostitutes are all described. Such homosexual men were also known to marry, according to the Kama Sutra: ââ¬Å"There are also third-sex citizens, sometimes greatly attached to one another and with complete faith in one another, who get married together. â⬠(KS 2. 9. 36). In the ââ¬Å"Jayamangalaâ⬠of Yashodhara, an important twelfth-century commentary on the Kama Sutra, it is also stated: ââ¬Å"Citizens with this kind of homosexual inclination, who renounce women and can do without them willingly because they love one another, get married together, bound by a deep and trusting friendship After describing fellatio as performed between men of the third sex, the Sutra then mentions the practice as an act between men and women, wherein the homosexuals acts are scorned, especially for brahmanas. (KS 2. 9. 37) The Kama Sutra also refers to svairini, who are ââ¬Å"independent women who frequent their own kind or othersâ⬠(2. 8. 26) ââ¬â or, in another passage: ââ¬Å"the liberated woman, or svairini, is one who refuses a husband and has relations in her own home or in other housesâ⬠(6. 6. 50). In a famous commentary on the Kama Sutra from the 12th century, Jayamangala, explains: ââ¬Å"A woman known for her independence, with no sexual bars, and acting as she wishes, is called svairini. She makes love with her own kind. She strokes her partner at the point of union, which she kisses. â⬠(Jayamangala on Kama Sutra 2. 8. 13). The various practices of lesbians are described in detail within the Second Part, Eighth Chapter of the Kama Sutra.

Using Quality Methods to Ensure Consistency of Care Assignment
Using Quality Methods to Ensure Consistency of Care - Assignment Example Mostly, the health professionals in the emergency department of any health care are not in a position to diagnose the disease the patient is suffering from. In the case study, the paramedics respond fast enough and give prompt treatment after a quality assessment of the patientââ¬â¢s condition. The paramedics in this study demonstrate professionalism in that they treat the patient on site before admitting him to the hospital for further diagnosis. It is also evident that it takes a lot of time before the patient could receive relevant medical care due to lack of facilities at the local community hospital. Once again, the paramedics show commitment by frequently assessing the patient at every level of treatment (Dlugazc, 2006). Most surprisingly, the paramedics use radio to send messages to the tertiary center which demonstrates poor communication. The recruitment of highly trained professionals requiring high remuneration is relevant for attaining quality performance evaluation. Additionally, organizations require relevant equipment and vehicles for ambulance services which require a huge sum of capital. The establishment of a better communication system such as the global positioning system in EMS requires allocation of hefty resources. The establishment of a quality management department is costly and the development of strategies to monitor improvement is important for achieving the defined goals (Dlugazc, 2006). A well trained emergency team is relevant for the realization of improved health care services. As highlighted before, the paramedics in the case are well trained and discharge their duties diligently. Reliable and accurate data for performance evaluation will heavily rely on the skills from these professionals and therefore the need for skilled practitioners. The various systems developed to offer services to the patients should have the capacity to collect relevant data for measuring performance. Training should be offered to the staff on

Ground Combat Vehicle - Research Paper Example It was designed and developed by a combination of proficient and highly qualified engineers. Ground combat vehicles are acquired through a special process known as the testing and evaluation. Departments of defense have in the recent past been keen on the application of Test and Evaluation (T & E) in acquisition of ground combat vehicles in the automobile industry. The process of evaluation takes a systematic review on three major documents related to the technical conditions of the vehicle before acquisition. The first document is the statement of objectives, which contains the parameters for ensuring that the combat vehicles are able to satisfy the objectives for which it is acquired. The next document is the statement of work. Statement of work contains information related to the working conditions of the vehicle. It seeks to confirm if the technical specification of the vehicle satisfies the requirements for the specified task and the possible life span. The United States of America has been in the process of acquiring major programs that is expected to replace the fragments of the Future Combat systems (FCS). An illustration to this is where the eight versions of the track controlled Ground Vehicle are replaced by the FCS. The US Federal Army is presently in the process of acquiring new combat vehicles to be produced under the Ground Combat Vehicle (GCV) program presently under formulation. TRADOC Company and Ft. Monroe are presently preparing a map for the capability-gaps that exist in the today situation and the future requirements. The requirement in this project is a single common vehicle. Alternatively, it can be satisfied by many types of Ground Combat Vehicles. The last evaluation of this study came out in the month of September 2009 and it was very critical because it helped in bringing very critical information to the limelight, and this benefited many people. The review of this program was also very vital

How Humanism had Impact on Italian Jews Research Paper
How Humanism had Impact on Italian Jews - Research Paper Example It is not dependant on divine notions of reality. Humanity provides human beings the rights and privileges to defend individual beliefs and interests. This paper focuses on the impact of humanism on the Italian Jews in the fifteenth century. Humanism a cultural, literary and scholarly movement The concept of cultural humanism was originated in the European Age of Enlightenment in the eighteenth century. The Western and Central Europe stepped towards the modern world from the medieval world between the fourteenth and eighteenth centuries. During this time the spirit of cultural humanism was originated by the Renaissance and was adopted by the Protestant Reformation. The power of the Church and the noble class was lost as doubts fell on ââ¬Å"old secular and religious authorityâ⬠3. The Reformation together with the Enlightenment initiated the developments as ââ¬Å"religious liberty, pluralism and religious tolerationâ⬠4. At the end of eighteenth century there was a restruct uring of society. This was influenced by the French and American revolutions. Religion was no longer the center of political social structure as all religions became equal in the eyes of the law5 Renaissance humanism was a cultural, literary and scholarly movement. It embraced academic disciplines like ââ¬Å"grammar, rhetoric, poetry, history and moral philosophyâ⬠6. ... According to Edwin Wilson, humanism was not the right term used by the literary humanists because their position was exclusive. These humanists did not advocate changes in humanism or society. While the religious humanists believed that scientific knowledge would play a major role in development of human life, the literary humanists did not support this theory. They overtly rejected science. Dr. Firkins of Chicago University described literary humanism as having a ââ¬Å"background that is scholarly, its basis is introspective and retrospective; it looks into its own soulâ⬠9. Literary humanism embraced the study of non-science subjects like philosophy, history and literature. It focused on literary culture and encouraged people to improve their lives through literature. It has been seen that religious humanism is often mistaken as part of literary humanism movement10. Scholarly humanism was an important part of the Renaissance movement in Europe in the medieval period. It was di sregarded by the historians of that period as it was seen asââ¬Å"degeneration into technicalitiesâ⬠11. Scholarly humanism was the ââ¬Å"first expressionâ⬠of scientific humanism12. It went through a development process for two centuries until it was met with doubts and controversies in the early fourteenth century. It again emerged in scientific development during the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Cultural Tourism as It Developed from the Time of the Grand Tour Essay
Cultural Tourism as It Developed from the Time of the Grand Tour - Essay Example Technology has been an important aspect of modern travel, the trains, planes, and automobiles that transport the traveller from one place to another an important part of facilitating travel. Cultural tourism has developed through the interest that has developed about certain areas of the world in which local offerings through culture, education, or merely through fun have supported an economic advantage to grow around a specific set of areas of interest. The Grand Tour The concept of the ââ¬ËGrand Tourââ¬â¢ was based upon 16th and 17th century educational tours that emerged in England and Ireland after the Reformation when Catholic pilgrimages were no longer possible under the new structures of religion that had become the Church of England. Britain is one of the first countries to establish a culture which can be observed for practices of tourism (Williams By the 18th century the travel experiences were referred to as the ââ¬ËGrand Tourââ¬â¢, a phrase that was first seen in a travel guide published in 1679 by Richard Lassel titled An Italian Voyage. The ââ¬ËGrand Tourââ¬â¢ lasted for several years, allowing for the beginnings of a career to take shape so that the traveller would begin to develop a world view from the experiences of the travel plan. This concept was a part of the education of English aristocratic culture. The result of the tours was a literary body of work in the form of travel guides that provided a framework of discovery for those who would follow on these types of travel experiences (Katz1998, p. 253-254). The Grand Tour was primarily a pursuit of the English, which was an experience that provides a contextual relationship to the beginnings of the modern period in the 18th century (Roberts 1998, p. 31). Travel in previous contexts had been based upon the unknown, explorations that would result in economic and cultural advantages that could include military and ambassadorial advantages for political purposes. Travel also occ urred for the purposes of relocation, but travel for the idea of educational experience and as a part of an extended leisure activity emerged during the time of the growth of travel guides and the emergence of a middle class that had the time and the means to pursue travel simply for the pursuit of experience (Roberts 1998, p. 31). As the middle class began to take on the ââ¬ËGrand Tourââ¬â¢, the educational purpose of the tour began to diminish. During the 1780s a shift in the purpose for the tour began to become noticeable as the purpose of leisure began to emerge. According to Richards (1996, p. 12) ââ¬Å"The spatial pattern of the Grand Tour also changed , from the ââ¬ËClassical Grand Tourââ¬â¢ which concentrated on the culture of the ancient classical world and the Renaissance, to the ââ¬ËRomantic Grand Tourââ¬â¢ with more attention devoted to romantic views of urban and rural sceneryâ⬠. The shift can be representative of an elite middle class that was b ored with educational based experiences and began to search for distractions that were less cerebral, looking for exotic and imaginative experimentation (Richards 1996, p. 12). The Geography of Travel Travel requires the element of geography, the search for interesting and foreign locals based upon the idea that there is a starting point and a destination. Holden

Sedimentary or metamorphic rocks and engineering issues Essay
Sedimentary or metamorphic rocks and engineering issues - Essay Example der, 2001).à Given the ability of engineers to measure all these, an emphasis on the latter is quite important in order to provide insight that would at least help in reducing earthquake intensities in the society. Particularly, the understanding of sedimentary rocks and their contribution to earthquakes intensities is necessary. To start with, earthquake shaking starts from the rupturing fault and then continues at other distances away from the fault. Earthquake shaking intensity is supposed to decrease as the distance from the rupturing fault decreases. However, it has been observed that shaking in one site is sometimes stronger than shaking in another site. Sometimes, this shaking can be ten times higher or stronger than shaking in another site (Ammon, 1997). Geologists have come up with information relating sedimentary rocks with earthquake shaking intensities. Geologists argue that shaking is always high in areas of softer rocks. In addition, shaking is amplified in areas of thicker sediments compared to areas of thin sediments. As it has been observed, the major reason why sedimentary rocks are associated with shaking intensities is because they are soft (Denecke & Series, 2003). An explanation of the relationship between sedimentary rocks and earthquakes shows that seismic wavesââ¬â¢ speed is much higher in hard rocks when compared to sedimentary rocks. This is because the latter are soft as it has been explained earlier. In areas with different rock types, waves tend to pass through harder rocks to the softer rocks, they slow down. However, in order to carry the same energy carried in the hard rocks, they tend to get bigger than before. Therefore, shaking at sites that have soft rock layers is stronger since the seismic waves tend to move slowly as shown in Figure 1 and 2 (SCEC, 2014). The loss of life and properties associated with earthquake intensities can actually be controlled by avoiding buildings in area of soft sedimentary rocks. If this is not

Mass and Energy Balance Essay Example for Free
Mass and Energy Balance Essay Abstract The objective is to produce a proposal for a chemical process plant which will be able to produce 550,000 tonne/year ammonia using LPG as the raw material. Different processes where researched and then finally one was picked, steam reforming. This was decided to be the most viable and cost effective process using the raw materials we had available. The report explains in detail how the process works and all aspects of how the plant will work including the mass and energy balance across the plant. What is Ammonia Ammonia (NH3) is a stable compound and is used as a starting material for the manufacture of many important nitrogen compounds and can also be directly used as fertilisers. It is produced by reacting hydrogen and nitrogen. It is a colourless gas with a sharp odour. The boiling point is -33.35oC and its freezing point is -77.7oC.1 Care must be taken when handling ammonia as can cause deep burns in the skin; irritation in the eyes and nose and when inhaled can cause coughing, sore throat and headache.2 There are different methods for the manufacture of ammonia. The three main methods are steam reforming, partial oxidation and electrolysis. Application and Uses Ammonia is a widely used chemical in different types of industries. One of the main user of ammonia is the agricultural industries for fertilisers. Around 80% of ammonia produced is for fertilisers such as urea, ammonium sulphate and ammonium nitrate.3 It is also used as a building block for nitrogen containing compounds like nitric acid (HNO3). It is also used in the fibres and plastics industry for the production of acrylonitrile, melamine etc., and manufacture of explosives. Ammonia is also used in water treatment such as pH control and also in combination with chlorine to purify industrial and municipal water supplies. Less commonly uses include as a refrigerant in compression and absorption systems, manufacture of household ammonia, in the food and beverage industry 4. Figure 1: Pie chart showing the uses of Ammonia. Market Trends Globally ammonia prices have been headed up due the large demand of fertilisers that are needed in the crop production to obtain high yield6. The current selling price of ammonia in Europe goes up to $600 per tonne7. Figure 2: Shows the global demand for Ammonia (D.a.NH3- Direct application of Ammonia) As we can see from the chart the trend of ammonia demand globally is upward. It is said that the global ammonia market is to generate revenues of approx. US$102 billion in 2019. As there is continous growth in population in the developing countries the likely to cause demand for foodstuffs are to increase even further. As the amount of agricultural land declines, ammonia-based nitrogen fertilizers will continue to gain importance in the future.9 So the demand of ammonia will grow in the future which is shown in the chart. Processes There are many different processes involved in the ammonia production. The most common processes for ammonia are partial oxidation, steam reforming and electrolysis. From these 3 processes the best process route is then selected and that process would be most economical and that meetes the design brief. Partial Oxidation Partial oxidation involves the reaction of oxygen with fuel to produce hydrogen. The following equations represent the partial oxidation of ethane, propane, butane and pentane. 10 C2H6 + O2 2CO + 3H2, C3H8 + 1.5O2 3CO + 4H2, C4H10 + 2O2 4CO + 5H2, C5H12 + 2.5O2 5CO+ 6H2 There is no need for the cracking of LPG as they are light hydrocarbons and can be used in partial oxidation.11 See Partial Oxidation flow sheet (Reference 1: Partial Oxidation Flow Sheet) Hazards and Environmental Impact The main emission is carbon dioxide which is a greenhouse gas and Partial Oxidation process emits more carbon dioxide compared to Steam Methane Reforming. Carbon dioxide emissions can be reduced by recycling it and selling it to urea and nitro-phosphate plants.13 No ammonia should be present in the air but maybe because of faulty equipment and maintenance activities, some ammonia maybe released. Ammonia becomes explosive at the 16%-25% volume in air which could occur if there are any leakages in the ammonia storage facilities. It is also toxic by inhalation and pulmonary oedema can occur up to 48 hours after exposure and could be fatal.12 Nitrogen dioxide that is released is a toxic gas can be harmful when inhaled but can be avoided as can be detected because of the smell. The large amount of waste water from this process is another problem but there is a river near the Milford Haven site. Also water pollution is a concern which may occur because of the suspended and dissolved impurities. It could also affect the aquatic life. Therefore the water must be treated in a full three stage water treatment plant before disposing it. 13 The disadvantage of partial oxidation is that the capital costs are higher for partial oxidation compared to any other process. It is estimated to be à £100-120 million for an annual production of 7.7 million GJ while for SR it will only be à £70 million. 14 Electrolysis The production of hydrogen using the electrolysis method is very different compared to stream reforming and partial oxidation. Electrolysis produces hydrogen by splitting water into hydrogen and oxygen using volts of current to separate the hydrogen to one electrode and oxygen at the other in a cell. Oxygen is the by-product in the process of producing ammonia which is valuable because it can be used in other chemical processes or sold to other companies for profit. In electrolysis there is no CO2 produced therefore there is no pollution. Standard electrolytic ammonia production energy consumption historically has been about 12 megawatt-hour. The fuel cost alone of making ammonia is $600 metric ton, and including capital and operating expenses that metric ton of ammonia cost about $800 to make. Compare electrolytic and using uses of natural gas as raw material the economically, for the past 100 years the cost of natural gas has not been higher than $1 and the fuel cost for a metric ton of ammonia from natural gas has been $30-$40. Figure [ 3 ]: Ammonia Manufacturing Process Figure 3: Ammonia Manufacturing Process Steam Reforming Gas purification Syngas of a mixture of hydrogen, carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide and water can be broken down in to individual components and further cleansed through purification. The syngas will enter a shift reformer, which breaks down the carbon monoxide in to hydrogen and carbon dioxide using steam (H2O). Carbon dioxide is much more environmentally friendly than CO and can either be released in to the atmosphere or used in other steam reforming processes in the future. Desulphurisation Sulphur is a problem when carrying out steam reforming as it acts as a poison for the catalysts involved. It is important that this is removed prior to the syngas entering the system. The process is carried out in the presence of a catalyst, which is usually nickel. This nickel acts as an absorber for the sulphur, and so several catalyst-filled tubes within the system with a large internal surface area will allow the sulphur to collect to be disposed of suitably. The Process Hydrocarbons usually contain sulphur which needs to be removed. The purification section is the first bed of the whole steam reforming process. Feed is passed through tubes containing zinc oxide. The sulphur in the feed reacts with the zinc oxide to produce zinc sulphide. This is to ensure that the feed travelling to the steam reformer does not poison the catalysts in this section in any way. The catalysts used in the steam reforming process are nickel-based. These are easily poisoned by sulphur species. The purified feed is mixed with steam and then is passed to the primary reformer, which involves a nickel-based catalyst where the steam reforming process is carried out. Once the hydrocarbon is cleansed of sulphur, the reforming process can begin. The reaction is with the hydrocarbon ââ¬â typically methane but it can also involve the likes of butane, propane, etc ââ¬â and water in the form of steam. The reaction for methane (CH4) is shown below. CH4 + H2O 3H2 + COÃâH = +251kJmol-1 C3H8 + 6H2O 3CO2 + 10H2 C2H6 + 4H2O 2CO2 + 7H2 C4H10 + 8H2O 4CO2 + 7H2 C5H12 + 10H2O 5CO2 + 16H2 Reactions for other hydrocarbons, such as ethane (C2H6), propane (C3H8), butane (C4H10) and pentane (C5H12) are also shown, with their respective steam amounts required and the products gained. Rows of tubular reactors are contained in a furnace, which operates at between 650 ââ¬â 1000 degrees Celsius. The hydrocarbon feed enters the system at a very high pressure, typically 20 ââ¬â 30 bar. The process is carried out in the presence of a nickel-based catalyst which is packed into cylindrical tubes through which the steam/hydrocarbon gas mixture is passed. The catalysts act as surface for which the hydrocarbon will absorb and the steam. (Reference 2: Steam Reforming Flow Sheet) Justification Steam reforming is the most viable proposition as we have all of the raw materials available within easy access, whereas if we were to use other processes, then we would have to source other materials e.g. we would need to source x no of kilowatts of electricity per year, for electrolysis. Mass Balance Cp Values Energy Balance Material Costs Simple Plant Cost Using a base of around à £410 per ton of ammonia, and output at 550,000 tonnes, it would be assumed that the plant would produce à £225,500,000 a year of ammonia. The Burrup plant in Australia was built at a cost of à £457 million and produces roughly 800,000 tonnes a year of ammonia. Using the 2/3 power rule, as follows, will allow the costs of the new 550k p/a plant to be shown. C = Cref(S/Sref)2/3 C = 457000000 * (550,000/800,000)2/3 C = à £355,984,702 The output of the new plant is à £225,500,000, but the plant costs à £355,984,702 to build, so it would take around a year and seven months for the plant to be profitable, based on an estimation without including the costs of the raw materials. Taylor Method Pay Back Time Sustainability The environment is constantly changing, whether by nature or by human led processes. Sustainability is about trying to manage this change through balancing social, economic and environmental needs, both locally and globally for present and future generations. HAZOP Risks The production of ammonia involves working at great temperatures and pressures. As such, it is vital that the equipment used in the plant is designed to withstand these conditions to function properly. The high temperatures and pressures involved in the production of ammonia can potentially put tremendous amounts of strain on the pipes and vessels used. The risks associated with this are: * Explosions from sudden release of pressurised gases from ruptured vessels * Fragmentation from rupture of the pipes * Fire * Poisoning from exposure to leaked materials * Chemical or thermal burns, again from exposure to leaked materials Not only are these hazards life-threatening, they would also be very expensive to put right for the production company. These risks can be avoided by preparing the plant for the conditions that it is about to go through. It is more economically viable to run the steam reformer at as high a temperature and pressure as possible. Magnesium oxide-lined furnaces, MgO, has a melting point of around 2800 degrees Fahrenheit, making it ideal for lining the furnaces used in the production of hydrogen. Hydrogen itself will cause some materials to become brittle and eventually break. Hydrogen features an active electron and thus will behave like a halogen, causing erosion in the metals that it comes into contact with. This can be avoided by using high-purity stainless steel in the sections of the plant which will come into contact with the hydrogen. This steel must have a maximum hardness of 80 HRB on the Rockwell Scale. Ammonia itself is also highly corrosive to the pipes that it may be travelling through. For this reason, it is recommended that stainless steel is also used here, at a similar hardness of that shown above. Most ammonia plants use centrifugally cast high-alloy tubing to hold the nickel-base catalyst in the primary reformer furnace. The most commonly used is similar in composition to grade 310 ââ¬â with 25% chromium and 20% nickel, balance iron. This has a carbon content in the range of 0.35 ââ¬â 0.45% for improved high-temperature creep and rupture stress. Thermal protection of piping involves fire brick owing to the high temperatures involved.

My Greatest Acheivements Essay Example for Free
My Greatest Acheivements Essay When I got the call from the volunteer services office a few days after my interview saying I had been chosen as a volunteer, I was ecstatic. Getting the opportunity to volunteer in a hospital and directly aid doctors and nurses over an entire summer was an honor and I learned many things about a doctor and nurses job from it. My second greatest achievement is starting a book blog, Hidden Gems to help self-published authors market their books. I started my blog Hidden Gems in August 2012, with the hope of reviewing books for self published authors and getting word out about their books. Shortly after setting up my blog and spreading news about the self-published books I got 1000 views in one month. With the high growth of viewers and followers on my blog, I got emails from authors from Australia and publishing houses to review their books. I still try to help self-published authors out and review their books and advertise for them because many of them try to make a living off their books. Helping these published authors is one of my greatest achievements and through this blog Iââ¬â¢ve been able to meet other book fanatics like me and hold proper discussions about each book we read. I will continue to write on this blog as long as I can and help these self published authors. written by kchandwani21

Obesity in the USA
Obesity in the USA Obesity Problem in USA Introduction Obesity signifies an overload total of body fat. If someones bodyweight is in any case 20% loftier than what it be supposed to be, he or she is normally considered as obese. If persons Body Mass Index (BMI) is between 25 and 29.9 he or she is considered as an overweight. If a person BMI is 30 or over he or she is considered as obese. Obesity has been affecting a lot of the American populace on a harmful level. Unless prospective on how to fight this battle is changed, we will continue to lose. Pediatricians, Parents, and even political leaders and Government are focused on promoting healthy weight in kids because obesity is becoming a huge epidemic in the United States. In this paper we are going to discuss about the various literature review on trends of obesity in USA, academic knowledge impacts and principles of active citizenship might have effect on the contemporary issue of obesity during the subsequent 5 to 10 years. Smith, Elizabeth, in her article Healthy Lifestyles sum ups not merely the enormous medical circumstances that can have an result on overweight children (cataract. liver disease, diabetes, high cholesterol blood pressure bone and joint problems, sleep apnea, etc.), but lots of the renowned sources. Genetically, there is enough numerical corroboration to illustrate that overweight and obese adults are further expected to have obese children, and that explicit racial/ethnic settings are more have an outcome on than others. In the fetal neighboring, elevated folic acid eating can demonstrate the way to health dilemmas in a fetus and infant, and denied nutrition by the mother as well destructively have an result on the fetus. In accumulation, the social setting in which the infant is raised, in exacting in expressions of work out and nutrition, will produce patterns go behind by the child for mainly in all probability their whole life. As per to Brownwell (1982), if cure from obesity is described as decrease to ultimate weight and maintenance of that weight for five years, an individual is additional expected to recuperate from the majority types of cancer than from obesity (Krieshok Karpowitz, (1988). Even though there isnt a cure, there are things that can be done to avert several from being obese. There are 3 physiological providers that assist make the function of obesity easier to comprehend. They are internal variables, external variables, and mediated variables. Internal variables are ones that a person is not capable to control for example the intestines size and brown adipose tissue thermogenesis. External variables are ones in which a individual has power over type of food, variety, and physical activity. Finally, mediated variables are a modest of both. The individual might have a little control however there are as well a number of things out of their control. Egger (2010) in his article 5 myths about hunger in America concentrates on how hunger cycle in children affects learning ability which tend to increases, reduces employment rates, school dropout rates thus diminishing national economic security while promoting a life of crime. He inter connects hunger and obesity again by centering on how youthful adults are too obese to work with the military, as a result decreasing the numeral of military qualified citizens and consequently decreasing national security. Obese children are in addition additional likely to be turn into obese as adults, thus increasing their enduring risk of grave health problems for example heart disease andstroke. How academic knowledge forces the social elements and institutions of both global and local communities The subsequent subject to cover up is how academic knowledge forces the social elements and institutions of both global and local communities. Elements of Social are actually anguished from obesity and the illness that approach down with it. Over time, with the rising obesity rate, a number of schools have started by means of diverse strategies to tackle the concern for habits of poor diet and growing numeral of obese students. The majority of children who are obese will be overweight as an adult additionally. As an alternative of focusing the problem on individual students, policies of school should effect on the school cultural and physical environment which can, consecutively, be additional conductive to improving dietary behaviors of student (Vecchiarelli, Takayanagi, Neumann, 2006). These changes cant simply occur at school and be fruitful except they are changed habits also outside of school. Two-thirds of U.S. adults citizens are obese or overweight, Rates of obesity and ove rweight. In wide-ranging are advanced in the South and Midwest, superior for Hispanic men than African-American Caucasian men, superior for Hispanic, African-American and women than Caucasian women, and tend to increase with age.. (Ogden, C. L., Carroll) The United States is a free country where we are allowed to choose and pick whatever restaurants we eat at, order at those restaurants, how a good deal food we purchase at the grocery store, the type of food we acquire at the grocery store, etc.Twenty percent of children in US are considered overweight or obese at age 11. It has various severe enduring effects for your health, and it is a important cause of preventable deaths in the USA Obesity can lead to high blood pressure diabetes, , and heart disease If left untreated, . Even though we are living in a nation with technological advancement and great economic power we have negligible quantity of realistic nutritional facts. Currently we are existing in a territory which is plagued with obesity. US health Policymakers are saying that aggressive action need to be taken to shoot the expansion of theobesityplague in the United States, which is effecting the nationââ¬â¢s health-care system, pushing many of Americans into an early on grave every year and hazarding the lives of thousands ofkids, a lot of of whom are or obese heavy prior to they go into kindergarten. Several local and state governments have intended putting into practice an excise tax on sugar-enhanced drinks.[ Caraher M, Cowburn] Obesity rates Over the past 20 years for preschool children (aged 2-5) and adolescents (aged 12-19) has almost doubled and for elementary children aged 6-11, have been increased by almost three-fold. These trends also have significant long-term impacts. Adolescents who are overweight have a 60% more chance of becoming obese adults. [USDA Economic Research Service] If one of the parent is overweight or obese, that number jumps to 75%. If this trend is not changed, there is a danger than one in every three children born today will develop Type 2 diabetes with other obesity related illnesses, and as a result of which , this generation of children may become less healthy than their parents. There are many incidents which propose that obesity is more described than merely a food loverââ¬â¢s ailment. Obesity is an epidemic in the other developed countries including USA. Other than half of Americans are obese, as well as at any rate one in four children. Virtually one-third of them are overweight. Obesity is increasing in the society because food is abundant and most of us do routine work that require little to no physical activity. There are numerous debates which professionals seem to be trying to do that are linked to the cause of obesity, which makes impossible to just place the blame on one thing, some are blaming advertisers by trying to persuade kids from what seems like immaturity to purchase their products. The main factors are oneââ¬â¢s stress management, oneââ¬â¢s environment, and oneââ¬â¢s genetic makeup. Factors that are included in obesity are, socioeconomic, psychological, genetic, behavioral, cultural, environmental or metabolic. The most common are psychological and genetics (emotional; for the need of ice cream, for example). Environmental and Behavioral changes in the American way of life as well as media influences and alterations in the diet of people are all factors that have contributed to the 30% increase in the average daily caloric intake. Someoneââ¬â¢s environment plays a very significant factor on our lifestyle in addition to the kinds of food we consume. Somebody who lives on a ranch For instance be inclined to devour more of natural foods than somebody who subsists in an urban surroundings and consume additional of processed food. The other major factor to the increase in obesity rates is the due to decreased physical activity of Americans, as a result of increased use of technology such as television, cars, and computers as well as decreasing physical education in schools. The biggest factor in America for the obesity rate is too much inactiveness. Every little bit of exercise counts from sacrificing the elevator for the stairs to parking further to walk into the store, by simply playing outside with your kids these all are little solutions to ending obesity. As large shopping malls and out-of-town supermarkets started to appear, people started driving their cars to get their provisions. Dependence on the car for travelling has become so intense that many people will impel even if their purpose is merely half-a-mile away. Obesity has been the most ordinary sort of undernourishment and one of the maximum with health dangers to life in the US today, and it can be averted. Obesity has many factors that cannot be overlooked. The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services has set a aim of dipping the obesity of childhood pace to 15 percent by 2025, and to doing so kids aged 5 to 15 would require to decrease an average of 64 calories a day Healthy People 2020is a comprehensive document of national health-related aims and objectives., US Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) Since 1980 has publishedHealthy Peoplereports every decade that: identify national health targets for ten years, encourage collaborations across various sectors, , guide individuals toward making informed health decisions and measure the impact of prevention activity. The new aim could be achieved by diminishing calorie intake, increasing physical activity or both. Organizations such as advanced-practice nurse [APNs ]are well positioned to direct their advocacy efforts at measures to reduce obesity. The APNs are eminently qualified to lead in their communities and are using various strategies for combating obesity. These goals among other things include specific recommendations that address, sugar-sweetened beverage consumption, nutritional labeling, the availability of lower-calorie childrenââ¬â¢s meals in restaurants, marketing of food and beverages to children, and) to monitor and track a childââ¬â¢s body-mass index and provide interventions using the electronic medical record (EMR]. As APNs work with health systems of care, such as medical care organizations and health care organizations, and the adoption of the EMR, they can accelerate their acquisition of knowledge in the areas of, weight management, food, nutrition and physical activity. By Telling someone to stop simply eating will not cure the obesity disease because it needs to be something that is in the genes of the person. By telling someone simply to exercise more will not cure the obesity disease because food can be used as an outlet for stress. There is no clean-cut cause of obese, so there will never be a clear cut solution either. Governments can also help reduce obesity, may experts say, by providing farmersââ¬â¢ markets and supermarkets with inducements to tender healthier foods and set up their trades in low down income areas.[ Smed S, Jensen JD, Denver]. Many, local governments schools and hospitals around the country have implemented policies to reduce obesity by banning the sale and serving of sweetened sips, which are lofty in calories and have modest or no nourishment value. The solution is as very simple as eating the same amount of food other than with healthier alternatives and a enduring diet, for instance being vegetarianism. Exercising is also very significant to keep healthy and fit other than, a number of fats are vital for the body as stored energy, insulation heat, and padding. Principles of active citizenship Active citizenship might as well impact the issue with obesity throughout the subsequent 5 to 10 years with citizens participation. Along with school and home based intervention, it needs to get even superior with government and community based interventions. Education is the key. By community activities organizing, walks can be planned to support physical activity, playgrounds can be made for things similar to basketball and additional physical activity, paths can be prepared for children to ride bikes on,. By approaching together as a community and support these things in our children, obesity can reduce significantly over the next 5 to 10 years. Leaving fast food chains alone and making foods at home is as well a foremost factor in obesity preventing. Keeping physically active Eating healthy and should be a part of a lifelong daily routine. No diet plan should be encouraged as a provisional eating arrangement, other than rather a permanent plan for healthy lifestyle eating Permanentand Successful weight lossis best achieved by changing how and when you eat, modifying your behavior by increased physical activity.. While some might undergo weight-loss surgery while other patients may be prescribed medication,. It must involve long-term For a plan to do well, alters in the routines of the whole family. The obese should not be singled out. Parents, siblings, including other family members living in the home will all benefit from a shift toward a healthier lifestyle. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention[CDC] recommends that, child caregivers, parents and schools should restrict admission to sugar-enhanced brinks, and put back them with low-fat, free milk, water or and a restricted quantity of 100 percent fruit juices. In early childhood, children should be given, low fat healthy snacks and take part in physical activity every day. The CDC also suggest parents to persuade their kids to live actually lively lives and decrease television sighting, as children are controlled by ads that endorse detrimental beverages and foods Their television viewing should be limited to no more than ten hours per week Weight lossby itself is hardly ever an objective in an obese child or teenager. By having a lifelong eating plan to a certain extent than a diet for the purpose in weight loss, it possibly will be a great deal easier to remain fit and the weight off. Somewhat, the goal is to sluggish weight gain or simply to preserve a weight over time. The plan is to let the child to raise into his or her body mass progressively, above time. This perhaps will acquire a year or two, or more longer, relying on the childs age, body mass, and development pattern.[ Moss BG, Yeaton WH (2011] With the Communities Putting Prevention to Work and First Ladyââ¬â¢s ââ¬Å"Letââ¬â¢s Moveâ⬠initiative, the U.S. Government While has made planned investments in prevention, these initiatives efforts demonstrates comparatively diminutive steps forward, and future public health prevention programs remain under threat., To make true advances should be part of concerted efforts by national and local governmental, health, and nonprofit organizations, advertisers food companies, and individuals to construct healthy weights the custom somewhat than the exception. Conclusion When we all start realizing the problem, and when the healthy patrons of America start making a more valiant effort to influence healthy habits, then our nation will start to see huge dividends. Until then, it is up to us. Personal responsibility is the strongest motivator in changing ourselves which will influence the nation. Knowing what we are eating gives us knowledge and ultimately power to change what we have become as a nation. Whether this power is given to us by events that change the industry or not we should become a more involved nation that does not accept things for how they are we should choose to do something about it. A good solution to any health concerns would be to grow your own food in a garden in your yard. When you grow your own food, you know whatââ¬â¢s going into the food, where it is coming from, and how fresh it is. Foods grown by you are usually the healthiest, too, because it is almost always a natural process.[ Dong D, Lin B.], There are a variety of ways for promoting healthy weight in kids. We can resolve overeating of food issues at home and school. We can force our children to increase exercise and activity. For the majority children who are stout or obese, the securest and mainly efficient way to drop weight is to consume less andwork outmore. In conclusion, obesity has on no account been further on the rise. It is affecting people individually in addition to a community and also worldwide. The medical cost combined connected with these preventable diseases treatment are approximated to enhance by $48-66 billion/year in the USA by 2030. Therefore, efficient policies to support healthier weight as well have benefits of economic by approaching together as a community, assuming the responsibilities as adults and setting fine examples for our children, we can avert obesity and reduce the majority chronic diseases that effect from it. A Chronicle of a Death Foretold by Gabriel-Garcia Marquez. Essay
A Chronicle of a Death Foretold by Gabriel-Garcia Marquez. The book "A Chronicle of a Death Foretold" by Gabriel-Garcia Marquez is about a murder in a small South American Village. It is based on an actual murder that took place in 1951 in the town of Sucre, Colombia. This novel provides a detailed insight to the culture of Latin America as it pertains to many aspects of an individuals life. Instances such as religion, marriage, death, and justice and interactions due to the concepts of honor and gender. Culture in most respects should be looked at holistically. Examining specific ideas and concepts within it become seemingly difficult because they form an intricate web, which can be related to other concepts and premises. Actions, dialog and even the descriptions of objects, people, and scenes enable readers to formulate a basic outline of the culture exhibited by the society expressed by Marquez. The story takes place in a small South American town some time in the mid-nineteenth century. While the story makes no direct mention of the year or city many sources indicate it was based on an actual event and dealt with people the author knew directly. It is an unconventional recollection of the author to the events prior to, during, and following the murder of a Santiago Nasar, wealthy young local Arab man. A native woman of the town, Angela Vicario had become the love interest of a flamboyantly rich and young Bayardo San Roman, son of famous and renown civil war general. In a matter of four months they were married. On the first night of their union San Roman learned his new wife was not the blessed virgin he thought he married. Angela Vicario was furiously beaten by San Roman and taken back to her home... ... is that as wedding gifts Bayardo received a new car and Angela received a gold plated 24 person dinner set. The indication of gender roles is abundantly clear that upon marriage men take on responsibilities for taking care of family by means of employment and the women practically regress into becoming pure domicile dwelling individuals. Ones culture within a society provides many individuals with many different interpretations of commonly accepted ideas and themes. "A Chronicle of a Death Foretold" by Gabriel Garcia Marquez outlines much of the culture of a small Latin American town and demonstrates the intricacies of culture. Various concepts have direct involvement with the carrying out of other concepts. Defending ones honor in an act that would bring about death coincides with justice, which often times materializes in the act that defies religion

Future of Hydrogen Fuel Cells Essays -- Automobile Car Vehicle Energy
The Future of Hydrogen Fuel Cells The present global economy is nearly entirely dependent on petroleum and crude oil imports from the Middle East. Where the current situation stands now, oil prices will continue to skyrocket and the environmental impact will continue becoming greater if no form of alternative energy is implemented to a greater extent within the coming years. However, to this effect, the industrial cost of producing such forms of alternative energy is in itself primarily composed of coal and petroleum. In this light, I will investigate the practicality of hydrogen fuel cells based upon hydrogen consumption and exploitation. Hydrogen holds enormous promise for the future regarding alternative energy sources. To this point, its ability to be used in cars, weapons, and as miniature batteries has been demonstrated by many companies. However, if this is the case, hydrogen should be the leading supplier of power around the world. What prevents it from being so? With alternate energy sources becoming more and more necessary and desirable, not only does the future hold promise for a cleaner environment, but many companies and entrepreneurs have the potential to make billions of dollars should hydrogen, nuclear, or some other alternative source of energy become implemented worldwide. Let it first be understood the underlying principles of hydrogen power production in a fuel cell. There exist many hydrogen fuel cells being developed by multiple companies worldwide; however, the fuel cell showing the most promise as a future source of alternative power is the Polymer Exchange Membrane Fuel Cell (PEMFC) and is widely regarded as a possible replacement for diesel and petroleum cars (http://www.fctec.com/fctec_types_pem... ...n production and subsequently, on the market. Thus, until the industrial cost for hydrogen fuel cells is reduced and its practicality increased, this renewable and abundant source of energy will remain on the smaller scale. Economic Booms of China and India Essay
It has been well known that China and India are having an economic boom whilst the west is in a recession. The question is whether China and India are going to slip into a recession as their rate of growth is thought to be ââ¬Å"unhealthyâ⬠, this would put the western countries back into recession which is a very worrying prospect for a slowly recovering western world. Chinaââ¬â¢s GDP (growth domestic product) is now over $4,211 billion a growth from $53 billion in 1978. China is between a LEDC and a MEDC and is growing at a extremely fast rate which is thought to be ââ¬Å"unhealthyâ⬠. Chinaââ¬â¢s main port (which there are 200 of) are growing at a huge rate which cannot be sustainable the Port of Shenzhen is growing at over 25% annually to provide the world which China made products. The port is home to 39 shipping companies who have launched 131 international container routes. There are 560 ships on call at Shenzhen port on a monthly basis and also 21 feeder route s to other ports in the Pearl River Delta region. China just had a deceleration in growth which worried the whole world. The slowdown can be blamed on a variety of factors. Chinaââ¬â¢s government was aiming for a slight deceleration, as it tried to tame its real estate boom and rapid inflation. While the rate still is allot faster than the growth in the United Kingdom, it marks an uncomfortable soft patch for China. Over the last three decades, the country has barrelled ahead at an average of about 10% a year. This shows that the ââ¬Å"unhealthyâ⬠growth of China of an average of 10% will eventually slow down and bring the whole world into a very bad recession. The economy of India is the eleventh largest in the world by nominal GDP and the third largest by purchasing power parity (PPP). The country is one of the G-20 major economies and a member of BRICS. On a per capita income basis, India ranked 140th by nominal GDP and 129th by GDP (PPP) in 2011, according to the IMF. However Indiaââ¬â¢s economic growth is also much higher than it is in the western world but I believe their growth is much healthier than the growth in China. Indiaââ¬â¢s industry only accounts for 28% of its GDP whereas in China that number is much higher. China and India share many similarities as they are both growing at a huge rate but Chinaââ¬â¢s growth is mainly in industry which is much less sustainable. China is also relying onà the fact communism remains strong and doesnââ¬â¢t crash because if it does wages will rise and put western countries in recession. India designs much more unique high quality products which is much more sustainable than Chinaââ¬â¢s large scale low quality batch production which is much less sustainable and that is the reason I believe that China is the biggest threat to the western world. I believe that China is the biggest threat to the western countries and would put the whole world into recession. Therefore I believe the countries should stop relying on China so heavily because China controls the whole world. If China did not believe in something a county did it could stop the exports to that country which would hugely affect that country. Therefore I believe that it is a threat to the west. I do not believe that India is YET such a threat as China but in less than 10 years I belive it may be just as much of a problem as china.
